Rachel Smolker is codirector of Biofuelwatch where she has worked as a researcher and activist examining and educating others about the impacts of large scale bioenergy on public health and the environment. Her work has spanned the gamut from grassroots organizing at community level, to participation in United Nations conventions on climate and biodiversity. She has a Ph.D. in biology/ecology from the University of Michigan, and prior to her current position, worked as a field biologist. Rachel lives in Vermont. Publications include To Touch A Wild Dolphin, Doubleday Press 2001; Burning Up The Biosphere and Calling it Renewable Energy, Common Dreams, Feb 10, 2010; The New Bioeconomy and the Future of Agriculture, Journal of the Society for International Development 2008; The Problem With Bioenergy, Convention on Biological Diversity Newsletter) May 2012.

Graduate of University of Notre Dame and Indiana University School of Medicine. Pediatric internship and residency at Los Angeles County University of Southern California Medical Center.  Board Certified since 1989; private practice pediatrics in rural Southern Indiana since 1989.  Currently on staff at Daviess Community Hospital, Washington, Indiana.  Professional interests and experience include medical staff leadership, credentialing, medical student teaching, breastfeeding advocacy, neonatology, pediatric psychiatry, preventive education and practicing sustainable holistic medicine.  She has been married to Michael for 26 years and has two Eagle Scout sons, Daniel, and Gregory.

 

Received his BA in 1972 and MD in 1976 from UNC Chapel Hill and completed a Family Medicine Residency at Duke University in 1979. Prior to medical school he worked at the UNC School of Medicine in biochemistry and hematology laboratories. He practiced Family and Urgent Care Medicine from 1976 to 2011. He is a Board Certified Fellow and lifetime member of the American Academy of Family Practice and served on the NC Academy of Family Practice Health of the Public Council. He served as Chief of Staff of Hugh Chatham Hospital, President of the Surry County Medical Society, Surry County Medical Examiner, Starmount High School team physician and was a Regional Representative for the University of North Carolina Medical School. He is a charter member of the Citizens Alliance for a Clean Health Economy. He was an Artillery Captain in the US Army, served two tours in Vietnam and was the recipient of four Bronze Stars and four Army Commendation Medals. He was twice decorated for valor in combat. He’s a published author and the recipient of the Ethel Fortner Award for outstanding contributions to literature.
